Choosing The Best Desktop Computer System

Choosing The Best Desktop Computer System

 Intended Usage

What do you intend to use the computer for? This is one of the key considerations when purchasing that desktop system. The main goal here is to get a system that will suit your computing needs. If youre using the computer for professional or business purposes, youll want to factor stability and service support into your purchase decision. On the other hand, if you intend to use the system at home, you may want a more well-rounded PC that can handle multimedia applications, web surfing easily.

Budget

Youll certainly need to consider your budget buying that PC. Low-end budget systems will save you a lot of money and are suitable for most home users. High-end systems with the latest AMD Athlon™ II Processors or Intel Core i7 processor will cost more and will be more suitable for those who want to play the latest 3D games or do heavy video or graphics editing.

System Features

OK, heres where it gets complicated. A typical desktop PC has got so many components, its hard to decide which system is good or bad. Were talking about a whole plethora of components from memory, video cards, sound cards, optical drives and so on.

Heres a stab at the most essential components in the PC and what you should look out for:

CPUs

The CPU is the brain of your system - so its a key consideration when buying that PC. The older chips like Intel Celeron and Intel Pentium 4 chips are now starting to become obsolete. If you want your system to last for some time, go for newer processors like the Intel Core i7 processor and AMD Athlon™ II Processors.

Memory

System memory is also very important - you can never have enough of it. Typically, look for at least 2Gb of memory in the desktop you want to buy. Anything less while pose a problem for business or graphics applications.

Motherboards

If youre buying the system off the shelf from vendors like HP, Dell or eMachines, the motherboard brand will usually not be an issue. In fact, most PC manufacturers dont publish the type of motherboard used in their desktops. The motherboard brand is of greater importance if you are building your own PC.

Hard Drives

My advice to you here is - get as much hard disk space as you can afford. A typical hard disk by todays standards would be about 320 GB at least. If you do a lot of downloading off the Internet, or edit videos or have a huge collection of MP3s, youd be better off with at least a 500 GB hard disk.

Optical Drives

A DVD-ROM drive is now a standard feature in all computers. Make sure youre getting at least a 16X DVD-ROM read speed. An additional consideration these days would be whether you want read-write capability - many computers now come with DVD-/+RW drives are also being bundled in desktops.

Monitors

I guess the key consideration here is whether you want a CRT monitor or LCD display. My opinion is to go for LCD monitor and not for CRT display because they already becoming obsolete in the market because their bulky and power hunger, and at LCD displays slimmer consume less power. At least get 17 inch wide series or the square shape LCD display. Good brand names here are: AOC, Samsung and LG.

Graphics

Computer systems come with either integrated video on the motherboard, or a physical video card. If you play a lot of games, especially 3D games like Half-Life 2 or Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2, you will not want to rely on integrated video. Make sure the system has a physical video card with PCI-Express slot and at least 512MB of video memory.

Sound

Again, it is common for computers to come with integrated sound on the motherboard these days but they come with HD audio. However, if youre a computer audio buff, go for a separate third-party sound card like the Creative Audigy Sound Card.

Ports

USB ports are almost standard features in desktop computer systems today. In fact, youll want to check that the system comes with support for the latest USB 2.0 specification. Even better if it comes with FireWire ports (which are essential for video capture and editing).

Operating System

The majority of computer systems these days ship with Windows XP Home Edition or Windows 7 Home, which is suitable for home users. Business users should look for Windows XP Professional or Windows 7 Professional to be bundled in the package.

Technical Support

After-sale support and warranty periods are a prime consideration especially you have no experience in troubleshooting computers. Most basic warranty periods last for a year or two and are sufficient for the average user. Dont go for an extended warranty period without reading the fine print. Most of the time, its not necessary to have overly long warranty periods as the reasonable lifetime of your computer will be about 4 to 5 years at most.

6 Computer Security Tips

1) Use a firewall

A firewall is a software system that will handle outgoing and incoming Internet connections of your computer. You’ll be able to clearly use the one engineered into Windows by default, however this can be by no means the foremost Efficient. i will like to recommend Comodo Firewall which is free and straightforward to use. Using Firewall is just one of Computer Security tip that i want to mention

2) Use antivirus

There are obvious reasons to use Anti virus Programs, but there are People that don’t have any antivirus or those who have, they have not upgraded thier antivirus since their permit has lapsed.. However there are quite powerful free antivirus Available. One must Install Antivirus to Protect and Keep thier Computer Secure

3) Updating software system:

New vulnerabilities are found in software system or operative systems like Windows each day. So one must always updates thier software system. Keeping your installed Softwares upto date is Important, as it will Keep hackers away from breaking into your System and its Said that any upto date program Works smooth without any glitch.

4) Use complicated passwords

Users like you and me use too weak  passwords that are very simple to detect for hackers, there are so many software which will try all Possible Combinations to Crack your Password, this is known as Bruteforce technique .  If your secret word(password) Consists of just 4 or 5 characters, it will easily discover it.

Your Password becomes harder to crack if it consists of 8 or 9 characters which also includes numbers, letters and special characters. To check the strength of your Password, there are plenty tools over internet. This is an important Computer Security tip that everyone must Consider.

5) Use totally different passwords

Most common mistake people make is that they use same password everywhere over internet. Yes, its very hard to remember passwords for all accounts but its highly advisible to have different passwords for different accounts.

This Practice Comes handy if one of your account gets Compromised/Hacked, then your other accounts are still safe.

6) Always Beware:

  • Finally, Abstain from getting hacked,  Always beware while Browsing Internet, don’t transfer and install everything and anything on your PC or Laptop.
  • Always check the sources of software system and websites that you just use to download programs.
  • Don’t be silly and amateur hackers won’t be able to do  anything to you (while serious and skilled hackers will not have any interest to hack you)

CCleaner Free Registry System Cleaner for MS Windows

CCleaner Free Registry System Cleaner for MS Windows

I came across CCleaner few years ago especially "thanks" my "becoming complicated" internet life. You know, one day I just figured out that suddenly Im using more than one web browser, installing applications because I thought they were cool (although not that useful :D)... you know the rest :D.

Not only they slowed my MS Windows OS but things like cleaning your Web browser cache will not only help to free-up some space, but most importantly, it helps to keep a secure system which is a lot, hacker-safe as well.

So like me, if youre finding that suddenly you gotta keep handling a lot of applications and have to manually clean their temporary file on daily basis, and looking for something that cleans/repairs more than your MS Windows Registry but lets you do things like clean Firefox, Google Chrome and several other web browsers cache, clean the Windows history files and a hell lot of other well known applications-based temporary files in general, I honestly havent found one (a free one actually) that that beats CCleaner for what it does :).

Although not many, but Ubuntu OS also seems to be getting some similar ones such as Bleachbit and SystemClean for instance but this one is unfortunately for the MS Windows users only. CCleaner has a very simple GUI and even lets you securely wipe/delete the free space on your partitions too.

Main features...

Removes:

*. Windows File Explorer cache of: Recent documents, RUN, search auto-complete, etc.

*. Empty your Recycle bin.

*. Cleans the memory dump files.

*. Clipboard cache.

*. Windows CHK (check disk) file logs.

*. Missing Desktop/Startmenu shortcuts.

*. Windows Prefetch data:

This actually is a helpful feature which started with Windows XP. It loads portions of your most commonly used program data into the system cache while the system is booting. So obviously it helps to speed-up the loading times of applications (since this is helpful, you can either enabled or disable so CCleaner wont modify anything. But as time goes on, I recommend that you clean this because it helps to Windows to start all a new once in a while + helps to resolve prefetch cache related conflicts, if theres any).

*. Menu order, Try area, user assistant history, Windows Location, etc related temporary caches.

When you click on the Applications tab, youll get a whole new settings that lets you remove temporary file of individuals applications such as:

Fraction of the individual apps it supports. Remember, as you install new applications, if CCleaner supports it, then itll be automatically added after the installation...
*. Mozilla Firefox, Google Chrome, Chromium, Opera, Safari, SRWare Ion (another Chromium derivative), Kmellon, and a hell lot other web browsers related cookies, history, auto-complete search index and browser cache, etc.

*. Multimedia applications such as: KMPlayer, Klite-Codec pack, Windows Media player (yikes!), Adobe Flash player, etc.

*. And a lot of other third party applications such as: Nero, Google Tool-bar, WinZip, Win Rar, Win Ace, MS Office, BitTorrent, IDM, GIMP, Notepad ++, Foxit reader, etc are also supported.

These are really a fraction of its features and supported apps to mention. Apart from that, it also has a built in  registry cleaner (excellent one) too. So after installing and unistalling apps, if you feel like the MS Windows is a bit slow than usual... then after cleaning the temporary settings of those apps you can try cleaning the registry as well.

But wouldnt let CCleaner get her hands on all the applications on your MS Windows OS either. For instance, I use Foxit Ready quite heavily and if I removed its temporary settings via CCleaner, then Foxit reader will lose her database such as the last page that I was reading on a certain PDF files, etc which is true to other applications. So use it wisely :D.

If interested, you can download it from this official CCleaner home page (its completely free and does not come with any pain in the as* type ads either!.). It supports Windows 2000, XP, Vista and 7. Thats about it.
